Fruit Orchards in Kulon Progo, There’s Musang King Durian, To Alligator Avocado

Kulon Progo, DI Yogyakarta

The tourist attraction area of Embung Tonogoro, Banjaroyo, Kalibawang, Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) has now been transformed into a super premium quality fruit plantation area. Various fruits such as civet king durian, bawor durian, kendil avocado to alligator avocado are planted in the area.

The super premium quality fruit planting is carried out by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK). This activity is part of the Watershed (DAS) rehabilitation program in Bukit Menoreh which is implemented in collaboration with PT Bharinto Ekatama (BEK).

“Currently we are at the watershed rehabilitation location carried out by PT BEK, one of the permit holders we asked to plant at the Menoreh Hill location, as part of the obligations they must complete regarding the permit to use the area,” said the Director of Soil and Water Conservation, KLHK, Muhammad Zainal Arifin, after planting trees in the Tonogoro Embung area, Saturday (5/2/2022).

Arifin explained that in this program partner companies are asked to plant fruit tree seeds because they have high water content. The goal is to maintain the hydrological balance in Menoreh Hill, which has been dominated by Sengon trees.

The Sengon tree itself is absorbing water so that it has the potential to interfere with the availability of water to supply the watershed of Menoreh Hill. On the other hand, Menoreh Hill is considered a water tower that regularly distributes water to the Kulon Progo, Jogja and Magelang areas.

“We are replacing the plants that are here, right? Sengon is more dominant. Sengon is a fast growing plant. Fast growing requires more water than other plants, so in the long term, it can disrupt the hydrological balance in Menoreh Hills. this,” said Arifin.

“Bukit Menoreh is actually a natural water tower that supplies water to Yogyakarta, Kulon Progo, Magelang and so on. Now, we substitute it with fruit plants that are more evergreen. The green is longer, holds water longer, so it can help the hydrological balance here ,” he continued.

Not only rehabilitating the watershed, this program is also an effort to transform the Tonogoro Embung as a development area for super-quality orchards in the Menoreh hills area. The fruits grown in this area are guaranteed superior and certified seeds. Finally, the seeds of the Musang King durian, bawor durian, kendil avocado, and alligator avocado were selected.

“These seeds are grafted and certified, and our fellow farmers here are very familiar with good seeds, so if we serve seeds that are not good they don’t want to plant them. We also ask our friends for help. their permit must provide super premium seeds with high economic value, so that later they can be used by fellow farmers who have land here,” said Arifin.

Later this fruit tree will be cared for by farmer groups, and the results can be used to improve the community’s economy. At the same time with the hope of educating the surrounding community for the management of productive watershed ecosystems.

“So that the community can increase their welfare, but also build the concept of environmental restoration by building a natural water tower on Menoreh hill,” said Arifin.

Rehabilitation of 250 Hectares of Menoreh Hill

Director of PT BEK, Ignatius Wurwanto said that his party had an obligation to plant fruit tree seeds in an area of 250 hectares. This land is spread out in Kulon Progo Regency and Magelang (Central Java), with the concept of planting the Agroforestry model.

“Bharinto Ekatama has an obligation on 250 hectares, so we cover 8 sub-districts and 17 villages in Kulon Progo Regency. Then 1 sub-district and 1 village in Magelang Regency, all the concepts are the same, namely agroforestry,” said Wurwanto at the same location. .

Wurwanto explained that the planting has been carried out since November 2021, and so far the progress has reached more than 80 percent. It is planned that a total of 110,000 seeds will be planted. Of that number, 86,000 tree seedlings have been distributed to the target locations.

“So the response of farmers to see that the seeds are good can certainly give good results, they are enthusiastic to plant. This is actually one of the trigger factors for why this activity is going faster. went well,” he said.

“And to add again for these times, because our predictions of rainfall until March, it turns out that it supports that. We hope that with this early planting, everything can go well and we can continue the treatment for the next 3 years. until later handed over to stakeholders through BPDASHL Serayu Opak and Progo,” he continued.

Wurwanto said after 3 years, his party will monitor the results of the planting. This is done in addition to ensuring that the plants bear maximum fruit, as well as to find out whether there is overproduction which is feared to affect the selling price of farmers’ crops.

“This is the next homework after we carry out all planting and we monitor, we monitor, we take care of it for 3 years, after that our homework is about how to use these agroforestry products,” concluded Wurwanto.
