The Indonesian Student Association (Permias) Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, United States (US) held a conference ‘Indonesian Night 2022: The Origins’ on February 18, 2022. The event was lively.

Various artistic and cultural performances were performed by Indonesian students, Indonesian citizens and diaspora, as well as Indonesian cultural arts groups consisting of local citizens.

In accordance with the theme of the activity, “The Origins”, the event was filled with dramas that told the origins of Lake Toba in North Sumatra and Lake Sentani in Papua, interspersed with various dance performances, gamelan, and band music, as well as serving a number of Indonesian dishes.

Prasetyo added that the promotion of Indonesian culture and cuisine is part of cultural diplomacy which is currently being enhanced by the Indonesian government.

According to Prasetyo, the role of the Indonesian community and the Indonesian diaspora abroad, including friends of Indonesia and Indonesianists, is also very important for public diplomacy which in turn is expected to be economically beneficial for Indonesia.

At the event, which was held under strict procedures, various Indonesian foods or cuisines were also displayed as an effort of culinary diplomacy, known as ‘gastrodiplomacy’.

“Hopefully, this can be an opportunity to increase the marketing and sales of processed food products and Indonesian spices abroad,” said Prasetyo.

Furthermore, gastrodiplomacy is part of diplomatic efforts whose objectives are, among others, to improve Indonesia’s nation branding, especially in Indonesia

“I’m very happy to be able to attend the Indonesia Night 2022 event in Oregon. It’s my first time seeing an umbrella dance from Sumatra, the dance is very unique. Besides that, the variety of Indonesian cuisine served is very delicious, especially tempeh!” said Rachael Fahrenbach, an American resident in the city of Corvallis.

Protection of Indonesian Citizens in the US

Consul General Prasetyo also invited all Indonesian people who were present to continue to maintain health amidst the high number of cases of the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. In this regard, along with the implementation of the function of protecting Indonesian citizens abroad, the Consulate General in San Francisco continues to make sure that all citizens in its working area are safe and protected from the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

Of the approximately 13,886 Indonesian citizens in the working area of ​​the Indonesian Consulate General in San Francisco, which includes 8 states and territories, the highest number of Indonesian citizens are in northern California and Washington state, amounting to about 6,000 people, of which 517 are students from various universities in the state of Oregon.
