Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, will change its official name to Krung Thep Maha Nakhon. Apparently, there are other cities whose names are also long and difficult to pronounce.
Krung Thep Maha Nakhon is not even a full name. Bangkok has a fairly long name, namely Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit.
The name consists of 21 words. With that number of words, the name, which has roots in Pali and Sanskrit, is recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest name in the world.
It was the Royal Society of Thailand, the linguistic academic standards institute in Thailand, who proposed the name change. Despite the name change, Bangkok will still be displayed in brackets after the new name.
Currently, Bangkok’s name change is awaiting review by the committee tasked with reviewing all draft laws. The Cabinet also asked the panel to consider additional observations from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Krung Thep Maha Nakhon means the great city of angels. For local residents, Krung Thep is no stranger. The word is commonly used to refer to Bangkok in everyday conversation.
The use of the name Krung Thep Maha Nakhon sparks pros and cons. Thai people express disapproval by worrying that the world’s citizens will find it difficult to pronounce it.
